My piano life, a collection

My Piano Life Gianmario Liuni

The scores that you will find here is the entire collection of “My Piano Life - A Collection”.
This is not a printed publication but only "manuscripts" which I used for the recording. These manuscripts come temporally from very distant periods of my life. Therefore you will find various inhomogeneities and imperfections typical of manuscripts although I have tried, as far as possible, to present everything to you in the most orderly and legible way possible.
For the nomenclature of the chords I follow a personal criterion, not far from the standard one, but which I believe allows us to immediately identify the complete nature of the chord and the main reference musical scale.
I hope that these scores can be a pleasant opportunity, both in listening to my piano work only "My Piano Life - A Collection", and for the performance of some pieces that you liked more.

San Michele - Coro Concentus

I was delighted and thrilled to accept the proposal of my friend Don Adriano Bregolin, parish priest of San Michele Church in Cavaglià (Bi), and Sergio Catto, promoter of the project, to compose music for the “Inauguration and Blessing of the Saint Michael the Archangel Automated Statue” dedicated to a saint who we invoke against hostile spirits. I thought of writing a hymn to be sung by the community and chose the Italian version of a popular Catholic prayer written by Pope Leo XIII in 1884. Saint Pope John Paul II said this in 1994 about the Saint Michael’s Prayer: “Even if this prayer is no longer said at the end of Mass, I invite everyone to not forget it and to recite it to be helped in the battle against the powers of darkness and against the spirit of this world”.

I am always very happy to place my music at the service of faith and devotion.
I had the honor of hearing my work sung in a splendid performance by the very talented mezzo-soprano Eleonora D’Ettole and later in the impressive and masterly rendition of Coro Concentus of Cavaglià led by its sensitive and attentive director Guglielmo Silva.
I am inserting the score and the hymn in its two versions here, so that you can listen to it directly from the website or can download on your device.

We also made a video with Coro Concentus that you can see on this page to remember this very pleasant and intense day.
I want to thank all the musicians involved and also my dear friend Alberto Boi for his great experience and sound engineering skills.

"As mentioned in the liner notes of "Jazz Variations", inspired by the presence of extraordinary musicians of the String Quartet of the La Fenice Opera House of Venice, I promptly composed two string quartets for the occasion, the first of which was published in the CD, while the second was not used for reasons of space. I thought I’d present this short piece here on my website along with the score. You can listen to it directly from the website or download the mp3 file"

Gianmario Liuni - Politango

"With “Politango”, Gianmario Liuni reveals the natural evolution of his creative vein veering towards an area that we would call -- with the usual restrictive yet necessary label -- “cultured”, meaning completely scored music. Liuni fishes in the “big” sea of jazz, of course, although here he is mainly inspired by the traditional popular rhythm of the tango, which strongly emerges in the very first measures and reveals the reason for his composing for two pianos: a dance. Like a spectator, the incessant ostinato rhythm accompanies the sinuous twirling of the two dancer/performers: vibrant, unique protagonists who gaze at and taunt each other, converging and separating. Fragments of themes, like bits of choreographed sequences, intertwine and are skillfully led along the pulsing lines of the tango or, better, of its transfiguration into a simple rhythmic pattern that continuously passes from one performer to the other as if indicating the current focus of attention. The inherent sensuality of the tango emerges in the physicality that is constantly required of the performers through dazzling dynamics that indicate the path to be taken and the order in which the twisting and spinning theme is interpreted. Here is a bit of advice for future intrepid performers: before you sit at the piano, take the score and look at it carefully. Keep staring at it as you move it farther away from your face, until all you see are tiny black dots dancing across the page. You will suddenly see the entire choreography of the themes and their continuous leaping across the four pentagrams and you'll have the impression of “seeing” what the audience will be listening to shortly thereafter."
